The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
